Apple Pencil and styluses in Hazelnote.
In Notebooks, you write with Apple Pencil, another stylus or your finger. Hazelnote recognizes your stylus on its own.

- You set up double-tap, squeeze and the stylus button in the pen tool's menu.
- Under Shapes, you can straighten lines, turn circles into a lasso and scribble mistakes away.
There's nothing to pair or set up. Open a notebook and start writing. Here's how Hazelnote recognizes your stylus, which gestures there are, and where you set them up.
How Hazelnote recognizes your stylus
The first time your stylus touches a page, Hazelnote shows Apple Pencil detected. On iPads that support hover, Hazelnote notices Apple Pencil as soon as it's just above the screen. The next time you open the app, it still knows you write with a stylus.
From then on, only the stylus draws. Your finger turns pages, moves and zooms. If you want your finger to draw too, tap Change in the note and choose Finger draws too.
The pen tool's menu
Tap the Pen in the toolbar. If it's already selected, a second tap opens its menu. There you choose Fountain Pen, Ball Pen or Brush Pen.
For the fountain pen and the brush pen you set the Pressure sensitivity, and for the fountain pen also the Tip sharpness. The ball pen always writes at the same width. The gestures below are in the same menu.
Double-tap and squeeze
- Double-tap: Tap your Apple Pencil twice to switch to the eraser, and double-tap again to switch back. Under Double-tap, choose Switch to eraser or Off.
- Squeeze: With Apple Pencil Pro, a light squeeze opens the Quick palette with tools and colors, right where your pencil is. It works from iPadOS 17.5 and can be turned off under Squeeze shows tools.
With Try double-tap and Try squeeze you see right away what happens. You can also set what double-tap does in your iPad's settings under Apple Pencil. Hazelnote follows that choice.
Styluses on Android
On Android, Hazelnote recognizes a stylus with its first stroke the same way, and from then on only the stylus draws. Instead of double-tap, there's the Stylus button: press the button while the stylus hovers above the screen to switch to the eraser. This works if your stylus reports the button while it hovers.
Shapes and scribbles
In the pen tool's menu, Shapes has four switches:
- Draw and hold: Pause briefly at the end of a stroke. It turns into a straight line or a clean shape like a circle, rectangle or triangle.
- Snap to other shapes: The ends of a line join up with nearby lines and shapes. Your handwriting stays where it is.
- Circle becomes lasso: Circle something and pause briefly. Whatever is inside the circle is then selected.
- Scribble to erase: Scribble over a word and it disappears. A highlighter underneath stays.
Spell check for your handwriting
Under Handwriting, turn Check spelling on or off. Misspelled words get a red dotted underline. Tap one with your finger to see suggestions, or choose Ignore.
Under Recognition language, choose the language you write in. The check runs on your device. On Android it downloads a language model once for that, and only over Wi-Fi.
