- The app needs no permission for the camera or photos, only the microphone for recordings.
- Keep the app open while you record, or Android only records silence.
You download Hazelnote from Google Play and sign in with your account. Here's what your device needs, which permissions the app asks for, and what to keep in mind when you record.
What your device needs
Hazelnote runs on Android 7 or later. On tablets, the app has its own layout: instead of the bar at the bottom, you open Summaries, Notebooks and Learn from the sidebar.
Anything with AI, like summaries, study sets and the tutor, needs an internet connection. In Notebooks, you can keep writing offline. What you write there syncs as soon as you're back online.
Your subscription belongs to your account. It works on every device where you're signed in, iPhone and iPad included. If a new device doesn't recognize it, tap Restore purchases in Profile & settings › Manage subscription.
Microphone and notifications
Hazelnote only asks for a permission when you need it:
- Microphone: for recordings, audio in a notebook and the tutor.
- Notifications: for the learning reminder. From Android 13 on, Android asks when you turn it on.
- Camera and photos: Hazelnote uses Android's own camera and photo picker for these, so the app doesn't need a permission of its own.
If you say no twice, Android stops asking. Hazelnote then shows a note with Open Settings right where you need it. Allow the permission there, then try again.
Recording on Android
Your screen stays on while you record. Keep Hazelnote in the foreground. If you switch to another app, Android only records silence during that time.
A phone call only interrupts the recording. It picks up again on its own afterward. If it doesn't, tap Resume.
Focus lock on Android
Focus lock is part of Pro and asks you questions before you keep using distracting apps. On Android, it needs three settings, and Hazelnote walks you through them when you set it up:
- Usage access, so Hazelnote can tell which app is in front.
- Display over other apps, so the questions can appear on top of the locked app.
- Battery optimisation off, or Android stops the monitoring after a few hours.
