Hazelnote works with your lectures, course materials and notes. Here's where that content is stored, who processes it, and what stays only on your device.
Your account and your content
We store your account, summaries, notebooks, study sets and uploaded files with Google Firebase. The data sits in data centers in the EU, and our server functions run in Frankfurt.
Whatever you upload and whatever comes out of it belongs to you. Your content is tied to your account, and other users can't see it. If you share a PDF or a text, you decide who gets it.
What the AI does with your content
For transcripts, summaries, quizzes, answers, audio versions and the tutor, we use AI from OpenAI in the US. OpenAI gets your content only to create your result. We store that result in your account.
You talk to the tutor directly: your voice goes from your device to OpenAI and isn't stored on our servers. If you talk about a notebook, the AI reads your handwriting. Only your device keeps the text it read.
What stays on your device
- Notebooks live on your device first, so you can write without internet. With your plan, they sync to your account.
- Recordings are saved on your device before they're sent. If sending fails, nothing is lost.
- The spell check for your handwriting runs on your device. On Android it downloads a language model from Google once for that.
- Settings like your pens and your color theme stay on your device.
Who else gets anything
- Apple or Google bill your subscription. The service RevenueCat manages the purchase for us. We never see your payment details.
- TikTok learns when you sign up or start a subscription, as long as tracking is allowed. That's how we see which ads bring people to Hazelnote. Your content is never part of it.
- We get an error report when something goes wrong in the app. It contains none of your notes.
